Fabric Specs Guide

Investing in the right textile requires understanding how a fabric behaves structurally. Use this direct specification guide to break down how our fabrics are oriented, measured, and rated for performance.

THE VISUALS

Direction & Repeat

Understanding how a pattern is woven determines how it will be cut and sewn.

  • Up the Roll (Regular): The pattern runs vertically, parallel to the fabric edges. Seams are required to piece wide furniture layouts together.
  • Railroaded: The weave is rotated 90 degrees, running horizontally from edge to edge. This allows for long, continuous layouts (like sofa frames) without vertical seams.
  • Pattern Repeat: Measured in inches horizontally and vertically, this dictates how often a design duplicates. This metric is crucial for matching patterns seamlessly across cushion joints and furniture arms.
ABRASION RESISTANCE

Durability (Double Rubs)

Instead of guessing how tough a fabric is by its thickness, the industry uses standardized mechanical rub tests (Wyzenbeek/Martindale) to measure longevity. 15,000 double rubs is the baseline for light residential use. 30,000 double rubs is standard for heavy-duty residential pieces (like a daily family sofa), and anything 50,000+ is considered contract or commercial grade.

MEASUREMENTS

Content, Weight & Width

The specific fiber composition (e.g., Polyester, Cotton, Linen blends) and density measured in $g/m^2$ dictate the tactile hand-feel, breathability, and natural resistance to wrinkling. Standard upholstery fabric rolls typically span 54" to 56" in usable width. This is the exact measurement your upholsterer uses to calculate how many linear yards are required for a custom build.

TEXTILE CLASSIFICATIONS

Best Uses

Upholstery fabrics are engineered differently depending on their intended final application.

  • Heavy Upholstery: High-density weaves built for main family sofas, sectionals, and high-use seating.
  • Multi-Purpose: Balanced-weight textiles durable enough for normal residential upholstery, yet pliable enough for heavy drapery, floor cushions, and tailored accent pillows.
