Direction & Repeat
Understanding how a pattern is woven determines how it will be cut and sewn.
- Up the Roll (Regular). The pattern runs vertically, parallel to the fabric edges. Seams are required to piece wide furniture layouts together.
- Railroaded. The weave is rotated 90 degrees, running horizontally from edge to edge. This allows for long, continuous layouts (like sofa frames) without vertical seams.
- Pattern Repeat. Measured in inches horizontally and vertically, this dictates how often a design duplicates. This metric is crucial for matching patterns seamlessly across cushion joints and furniture arms. Larger repeats generally require extra yardage for pattern matching.

Instead of guessing how tough a fabric is by its thickness, the industry uses standardized mechanical rub tests (Wyzenbeek/Martindale) to measure longevity.

Measurements
Content, Weight & Width
The specific fiber composition (e.g., Polyester, Cotton, Linen blends) and weight — measured in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²) — dictate the tactile hand-feel, breathability, and natural resistance to wrinkling. As a rule of thumb, lightweight fabrics fall between 4–6 oz/yd², medium-weight between 6–9 oz/yd², and heavyweight at 9 oz/yd² and above.
